In July 2026, the learning community webinar featured Kara Mizokami-Stout, MD MSc, Assistant Professor | Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology and Diabetes | University of Michigan.
Dr. Kara Mizukami-Stout discussed insulin use in type 2 diabetes, including when insulin is still needed, how to start and optimize insulin therapy, and advanced insulin delivery modalities. She reviewed clinical scenarios for insulin initiation, the types of insulin and their pharmacokinetics, and provided case examples illustrating basal and bolus insulin use. Dr. Mizokami-Stout highlighted the importance of considering insulin in specific populations, such as those with severe insulin deficiency or resistance, and discussed the role of guideline-directed therapies like GLP-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors. She addressed pitfalls and pearls for successful insulin use, including psychosocial barriers, the need for multidisciplinary support, and practical tips for insulin administration. Advanced modalities such as concentrated insulins, smart pens, patch pumps, and automated insulin delivery systems were reviewed, with case examples demonstrating their impact on glycemic control.
