In this MCT2D-led paper, published in JAMA in May 2024, researchers investigated changes in GLP-1RA prescribing rates to U.S. adolescents and young adult patients between 2020 and 2023. They found a dramatic increase in the number of people receiving these medications, with a nearly 600% rise. This increase was especially significant for females.
The work was led by Joyce M. Lee, MD, MPH, MCT2D content expert and the Robert P. Kelch Research Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, at the University of Michigan. Additional authors included MCT2D Director, Lauren Oshman, MD, MPH, and MCT2D content expert and obesity medicine specialist, Dina Hafez Griauzde, MD.
